Premier League History

Hull City have spent five seasons in the Premier League prior to this year’s return: 2008/09 and 2009/10 (their first-ever top-flight campaigns), then 2013/14 through 2015/16. Their debut season was genuinely dramatic — survival was only confirmed on the final day, at the expense of Newcastle United — before relegation followed the year after. Their second spell, under Steve Bruce, included the club’s first-ever FA Cup final appearance in 2014, lost 3-2 to Arsenal, before relegation again ended that run in 2016/17. They return for 2026/27 after a nine-year absence, having won this year’s Championship play-off final against Middlesbrough thanks to an Oli McBurnie goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Pre-Premier League Achievements

Hull City were founded in 1904, in a city where rugby league — through Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers — was the dominant sport, making football’s early foothold there a genuine uphill battle. They joined the Football League in 1905, finishing fifth on debut. For most of the 20th century, Hull were a yo-yo club between the second, third, and fourth tiers, winning the old Third Division title in 1965/66 and enjoying a near-miss at promotion to the top flight under player-manager Terry Neill in the early 1970s, before he left for Tottenham. It took until 2007/08, under Phil Brown, for Hull to finally reach the Premier League for the first time in their history — a genuinely historic moment for a club that had waited over a century for it. More recently, they won League One in 2020/21 on their way back up through the divisions.

City Represented

Hull City play in Kingston upon Hull, a port city in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Hull are owned by Acun Medya, the media company of Turkish television mogul Acun Ilıcalı, who completed his takeover from previous owner Assem Allam in January 2022. Ilıcalı, a vice-president at Fenerbahçe before taking over Hull, has run the club with a notably high-turnover managerial approach — six full-time head coaches in under four years, including Shota Arveladze, Liam Rosenior (sacked specifically, in Ilıcalı’s own words, over a “difference in football philosophy” after his teams didn’t play attacking enough for the owner’s taste), and current head coach Sergej Jakirović, the Bosnian who led the club to promotion. Ilıcalı has been candid about how emotionally taxing club ownership has proven compared to simply being a fan of Fenerbahçe.

Financial Position

Hull’s 2024/25 accounts, the third full season under Ilıcalı, showed a pre-tax loss reduced to £10.2 million (down from £18.8 million the year before), aided by a significant £33.1 million profit on player sales, against revenue of £25.8 million. The club has been among the Championship’s more prolific spenders under Ilıcalı — around £26 million in a single summer window at one point. Ahead of the Premier League return, the club secured a £55 million bridging loan from investment firm Point72, secured against the training ground and the club’s stadium lease — a move Ilıcalı has explained as smart cash-flow management given that the promotion windfall, estimated at over £200 million, is paid out in stages across three seasons rather than as an immediate lump sum, rather than any sign of financial distress.

Stadium

Hull play at the MKM Stadium (previously known as the KC Stadium and Hull City Stadium), a 25,586-capacity ground opened in 2002, owned by the local council with the club holding the lease — the same lease used as security for the recent bridging loan. There’s no indication of any redevelopment or relocation plan; the stadium comfortably supports Hull’s current scale, with the more pressing infrastructure question being what a sustained Premier League run might eventually demand of it.

International Appeal

Hull’s international profile is shaped almost entirely by its Turkish ownership — Ilıcalı’s own media background and Fenerbahçe ties bring a level of Turkish media interest in the club well beyond what its playing history alone would generate. The current recruitment approach reinforces that international lean: ahead of this Premier League season, Ilıcalı publicly posted national flags alongside completion probabilities for transfer targets from Japan, Greece, Sweden, Australia, Croatia, and Portugal, an unusually transparent and genuinely global scouting net for a club of Hull’s traditional size.

Playing Style

Ilıcalı has been explicit and consistent about wanting attacking, entertaining football regardless of who’s been in the dugout, to the point of removing managers specifically over stylistic disagreements. Jakirović, previously with Kayserispor, Zrinjski Mostar, HNK Rijeka, and Dinamo Zagreb, led the promotion-winning side to a play-off final built around goalscoring form, with top scorer Oli McBurnie contributing 18 goals across the campaign. The specific tactical identity is still being established at this level, but the ownership mandate is unambiguous: whichever system is used, it needs to attack.

There’s no formal multi-club ownership structure at Hull, but Ilıcalı’s Turkish football connections — his prior role at Fenerbahçe specifically — have shaped a recruitment pipeline with a genuine Turkish and wider European flavour, including past signings like Abdülkadir Ömür from Trabzonspor. The club’s transfer dealings under this ownership have leaned more on Ilıcalı’s personal football network and international scouting reach than any single recurring feeder-club relationship.
